Hellblazer

Having been amused by the Hellblazer comic, I went and saw Constantine.
With suitably low expectations. I enjoyed it more than Daredevil, and it was
WAY better than WingCommander.

But it had it’s own problems.

How cute.

Now that it’s warmer out, the small daughter has taken to greeting me at the
door with an excited squeal of “Daddy”, handing me her shoes, and pointing at
the door. The intentions are clear: we’re going for a walk.

Consignment sale goodness

We had hit the kidseverywear consignment sale earlier in the week to get
clothes for the wee beastie, but went back on saturday morning to see what
was left and if there was anything we wanted at clearance price.

There was a backpack for toting chillun’s around, and we’d been thinking about
one of those, so we loaded the small daughter in and took it for a test ride while
we shopped the rest of the sale. (we liked it) By the time we left, no fewer
than 3 people had stopped us and asked us how we liked the carrier. (we’ve
been using it for under an hour by this point. we like it, but that’s hardly much
time to tell).

Whoops, misread that.

I read one of the yahoo headlines as “Librarian kids pieces together broken
lives” and found myself wondering what’s so bad about being a librarian kid?
Do we need to feel bad for Griffin or something? Are they forced to eat the
library paste and be quiet at all times? And what about Librarian cats?

Closer inspection showed that it was Liberian, not librarian. That makes a lot
more sense.

It slices, it dices….

well, it doesn’t do either, but it sure does julienne.

My wife got me a julienne peeler, and my does it work ever so much better
than the food processor or the mandoline does.

yummy matchstick sized carrot threads in the stirfry goodness.
Much nicer than chopping away madly with the knife for ages.

Struwwelpeter

Ok, the germans have some whack childrens stories (and I found them already
translated, so no need to pester Enno with “what’s that say?”.

follow the links at the bottom of each page for the next story. And don’t miss
Pauline and the Matches!

Isn’t Die Geschichte vom Daumenlutscher just the nicest bedtime story ever?

I think this book explains a lot of things.

senor y senora…

The wife was working one a crossword puzzle last night, which had a theme of
an actor who had been in some large number of movies and had a particular
birthday. As she was puzzling things out she finally muttered “Gene Hackman?”

My immediate response was, of course, “Don’t talk to me about Gene
Hackman”. For reasons that probably only the Unpleasants would recognize
and find amusing. (it’s a song)

I then found myself trying to explain WTF I was talking about, short of dragging
out the cd and fast forwarding through the track to get to the hidden song.
Maybe this weekend.

“and if you don’t get him,
you get Andie Mcdowell”

PCloadletter? WTF?

I was recently reminded of an app called PCloadletter (yes, after THAT movie)
that lets you change the READY message on hp printers. To whatever else you
want. And I’m looking at a big ol’ list of printers wondering what folks’d do
when the printer starts claiming it has a CRAYON JAM, or telling them INSERT
COIN TO PRINT, or even GAME OVER

Not that I’m going to do it, since I like having a job, but…
Hijetter is another program that’ll let you change the messages. I leave
obtaining them as an exercise for the reader.

Your monkey wants to go to Dockside Dolls.

From todays issue of the Chronicle, page 4 newsinbrief

“Monkeys pay to see sexy pics: Duke University Medical Center researches
(sic) have found that monkeys will “pay” juice rewards to see images of high-
ranking monkeys or female hindquarters. They say their research technique
offers a rigorous laboratory approach to studying the “social machinery” of the
brain and how this machinery goes awry in autism.”

I’m not sure if they’re saying autistic folks would rather drink their juice
rewards or what, but I thought I’d share this little gem.
